Once Vincent had seen the fresh, colourful paintings of the Impressionists in Paris, he also wanted to introduce more colour into his work. His initial flower still lifes still had traditional colours, but Vincent tried out increasingly more extreme colour contrasts.
Vincent made his first still lifes of sunflowers in Paris. The painter Paul Gauguin was impressed by them. Vincent was very honoured to hear this. He had recently got to know Gauguin and looked up to him. For precisely this painter to appreciate his work confirmed his feeling that he was on the right track. Not long after, Vincent moved to the South of France. When he heard that Gauguin would actually be coming, he painted several still lifes of sunflowers with which he decorated the guest bedroom.
Vincent wanted to combine two versions of the Sunflowers with Woman Rocking the Cradle , the portrait that he made as an homage to the comforting mother figure. Some of Vincent van Gogh's most famous works are his Sunflower series. He painted a total of twelve of these canvases, although the most commonly referred to are the seven he painted while in Arles in - The other five he had painted previously while in Paris in There are many pieces within this series of paintings each is clearly identifiable as a Van Gogh work in which there are only minor differences that separate them.
The overall layout of the painting along with the positioning of the actual sunflowers usually remains the same in similar paintings. As Van Gogh anticipated in , the Sunflowers finally became his and served - combined with self-portraits - as his artistical arms and alter ego up to the present day: no retrospective Van Gogh exhibition since voluntarily missed to include them, and a wealth of forgeries, as well as record-setting price paid at auction, acknowledges their public success: Perhaps, because Van Gogh's Sunflowers are more than his or him - they may be considered, as Gauguin put it, the flower.
While Vincent himself never actually stated why he liked the sunflowers, in particular, references to them are made in his many letters, which help give us some idea. In a letter to his sister dated 21 August , he talks of his friend Gauguin coming to live with him in his yellow house in Arles.
Then goes on to say that he intends to decorate the whole studio with nothing but sunflowers. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam today 11 January announced that its own version of the Sunflowers has been temporarily removed to the conservation studio. It owns one of the three versions of the yellow sunflowers, a copy of the August London Sunflowers, done with Paul Gauguin in mind, and painted in January The restoration will be relatively simple and will be done just after the further research.
